Conventional Orthodontics vs. Invisalign®

Both adult and teen men and women can use Invisalign to straighten their teeth in Smithtown, NY.Braces are by far the most common form of orthodontic treatment, but they are not the only option for straightening your teeth. One alternative is a clear aligner, such as Invisalign, which works to straighten teeth in a discrete way. Another form of orthodontic treatment is a retainer, which might be utilized after braces come off, or may also be utilized if there are very minor orthodontic adjustments that need to take place. At The Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, we will work with you to come up with a unique treatment method for your individual needs that will produce stellar results.

Braces: The Most Common Orthodontic Option

Braces have received somewhat of a bad rap over the years, but it’s important to keep in mind that they have come a long way from several decades ago. Braces are no longer large, clunky, and unsightly. There are now all kinds of aesthetically pleasing options that help hide the fact that you are having orthodontic work done. There are clear brackets, metal brackets, and a variety of personalized embellishment options. There are even braces that can be applied to the inside of your teeth so that no one can see them. That being said, most adults would rather utilize clear braces due to their ease-of-use and ability to remove the appliance during meals.

Retainers: A Useful & Limited Orthodontic Option

A retainer is a removable or fixed orthodontic appliance that, compared to braces, applies a reduced amount of pressure on the teeth. While this reduced pressure can be ideal to correct minor orthodontic problems, the vast majority of orthodontic issues are too complex or severe to be treated with retainers. Most orthodontic complications are fixed by applying pressure to teeth over long periods of time, which encourages the teeth to move into the desired corrective position. Retainers are typically only worn for a portion of the day, and so their useful applications are severely limited. After we examine your mouth, we will be able to make an informed diagnosis that will lead to the right treatment plan for you. If a retainer can fix the problem in a way that will save you time and money, we will be happy to recommend that as an option.

Invisalign:A Discrete Alternative to Braces

Invisalign is a teeth alignment option for both teens and adults that takes the place of braces and is invisible in your smile. Instead of attaching big metal brackets and wires to your teeth, we custom fit them with thin, clear, plastic trays that you wear throughout the day and night. The trays will gently push your teeth into the correct position. Once each tray has done its job of moving your teeth a little bit further into the correct position, you will switch it out for a new one that continues the progression of your teeth.
