Fixed Dentures

Fixed or implant anchored dentures are dentures that are supported by and attach to, dental implants. Dental implants are small titanium screws that are surgically placed into the jawbone and serve as an artificial root element. If you have lost an entire arch of teeth, and have enough bone in the jaw to support implants, then you may be a perfect candidate for fixed dentures.

There are many reasons why patients prefer fixed dentures over the traditional, removable kind. Unlike removable dentures, fixed ones do not slip out of place. They function like natural teeth and provide more comfort because they do not rest on the gums. They do not need to be replaced as often either. Because the titanium screw eventually fuses with your bone, they prevent bone loss and can last a lifetime. It is important to note that the dentures themselves may need to be repaired or replaced after significant use, but this could take many years.

Fixed Dentures Treatment Process

Before you receive your implant anchored dentures, you will need an initial consultation. During this stage, Dr. Shapiro will review your records, take X-rays, and create molded impressions of your gums and any remaining teeth so that a model can be made. During a span of several weeks and typically four visits, Dr. Shapiro will make a temporary denture to be used to help determine where your implants and final denture should be placed. Implants are typically placed near the front of the jaw because there tends to be more bone here than in the back.

You will need to undergo only one surgical procedure. During this surgery a small incision will be made in the gum, and a hole will be drilled into the bone. The titanium screw will be implanted. After this surgery you will be given temporary fixed dentures if there is enough support. In some cases, where the implants require more healing time for bone to grow, a set of temporary removable dentures is fabricated. After the required healing time of 3-4 months the implants can be permanently loaded.  In some cases, a metal bar or snap will be added for support. At this point, your permanent teeth can be fastened to the implants and your new smile will be complete. You will be able to resume your normal diet, and you may even forget you have implants!
