Dental Implants vs Traditional Dentures

Tooth loss can happen for a variety of reasons: gum disease, bruxism, trauma. When you lose a tooth, your entire life is affected. Replacing missing teeth is essential for restoring many of your normal day-to-day activities, including eating and speaking. One of the most common solutions for multiple missing teeth is a dental denture, and they have been used for decades. Dental implants, on the other hand, are a relatively new procedure, but they offer many benefits that dentures cannot. At The Center for Cosmetic Dentistry in Smithtown, we can help our Long Island patients to determine which option is the best for you and your needs.

Traditional Dentures Explained

Dentures are removable prosthetic teeth. The teeth are set into an acrylic gum-colored base, which is made from molds of your mouth. They can replace sections of missing teeth or an entire arch of teeth. Dentures are supported by your gums and held in place by suction. They need to be taken out every night for cleaning and to give your gums a break.

Traditional dentures are a great cost-effective solution for missing teeth.Benefits of Traditional Dentures

  • Speech is improved
  • Your smile is restored
  • Your ability to bite and chew your food is restored

Drawbacks of Traditional Dentures

  • Dentures may slip out of place while eating or speaking
  • They put stress on esisting teeth which may lead to their demise
  • They can come loose, rub against your gums, and lead to sores
  • You need to be refitted for dentures approximately every seven years

Dental Implants Explained

With a surgical procedure, titanium screws are inserted into your jawbone. Osseointegration, or the fusion of your bone with the implants, turns the implants into a replacement tooth “root” of sorts, which support your replacement teeth. They can be used to replace a single tooth, or several implants can take the place of a traditional denture, supporting an implant-supported denture (like the All-on-4 Treatment Concept).

If you are looking for a more permanent solution, dental implants are the way to go.Benefits of Dental Implants

  • More comfortable
  • Do not slip out of place
  • They are permanent and non-removable
  • They do not put additional stress on existing teeth

Drawbacks of Dental Implants

  • They require surgery for placement
  • You need to have sufficient bone mass
  • Implants are more expensive than traditional dentures

For osseointegration to take place, you need to have sufficient bone mass to begin with. This can make you ineligible for certain implants unless you have a bone graft. However, if you are in need of a full arch of teeth and don’t have enough bone mass to support the 6-to-8 implants typically used for an implant-supported denture, you may be a candidate for the All-on-4 Treatment Concept.
