Digital X-Rays

Dental exams serve a few purposes. A routine dental exam allows for the detection of different oral health issues before symptoms begin to appear. If symptoms of an issue are present, an exam helps to determine the cause. A major part of your exams involves a visual inspection of your mouth. However, there are many components of your mouth that are hidden from view. We need to be able to see all parts of your mouth to provide you with optimal care. At the Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, we can see the hidden parts of your mouth using digital X-rays.

What are Dental X-Rays Used For?

Dental X-rays are an important part of diagnosing a variety of different oral health concerns and planning the best possible treatments to restore the health of your mouth. They are images that show us the hidden components of your mouth, including the spaces between your teeth and the areas hidden under your gums and other soft tissues. With dental x-rays, we can:

  • Spot cavities developing between your teeth
  • See damage in your tooth roots
  • See damage to your jawbone as well as areas of missing bone mass.
  • Diagnose infections
  • See the position of your wisdom teeth
  • Locate tumors in the jaw
  • Determine the need for a bone graft before dental implant placement
  • Determine optimal placement for dental implants

Why Digital X-Rays are Low Radiation

Today, we use digital X-rays. One of the biggest benefits of using digital X-ray technology is that they are low radiation. In most cases, radiation exposure is reduced up to 95%. This is because digital X-rays use digital or electronic, technology to capture your images. An electronic sensor, which is attached to a computer, is positioned in your mouth. We then click a button on the computer to take the image, which is displayed almost instantly on the computer monitor.

While the amount is greatly reduced, there is still some radiation exposure. It is significantly smaller than with traditional technology, however. Your safety is our top priority. If X-rays are being recommended, it is because the pros of these images outweigh any cons, and they can help us to provide you with the best possible oral care.

Digital X-Rays Vs. Traditional X-Rays

Digital X-rays provide many significant advantages over traditional X-rays. One of the biggest benefits is that there is significantly less radiation exposure. Other benefits of digital X-rays include:

  • Faster images. With traditional X-rays, the images would need to be developed in a dark room using special chemicals. This took valuable time out of your appointment. With digital X-rays, the images are displayed almost immediately on a computer monitor. There is no need for us to leave the room to develop the images.
  • Better diagnoses. Specialized software enables us to manipulate the images to get a much closer look at the structures within your mouth. This allows for more accurate diagnoses and better treatment plans. In turn, this leads to better care.
  • Better patient experience. Your entire appointment is spent with you. We can go over your images and help you understand your diagnosis and treatment options. We can take the time to answer your questions and address your concerns. As a result, you can feel more confident in the care you receive.

With digital X-rays, we can more accurately diagnose a variety of different oral health issues and formulate much more effective treatment plans. For more information regarding digital X-rays, contact the Center for Cosmetic Dentistry at (631) 982-9669 today.
