Local Long Tales

It’s said that Richard Smith, the founder of Smithtown, once bravely rescued the daughter of a Native American chief. As his reward, the chief granted him whatever land he could encircle in a single day. The only restriction was that he had to do so, while riding a bull. So the story goes, Smith chose to make this epic ride on summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and the land he encircled is where the town now lies.

In actuality, Smith acquired the land from his friend, Lion Gardiner, but locals prefer the legend. You can enjoy a little bit of creative “history” at the corner of Jericho Turnpike and St. Johnland Road. There you will find a statue commemorating Richard Smith’s famous bull, Whisper, commissioned by one of Smith’s descendants.
